THE INSPIRING TRUE STORY OF FENCING CHAMPION ENDEL NELIS, WHO OVERCAME SOVIET OPPRESSION TO BECOME A ROLE MODEL TO THE CHILDREN OF HIS HOME COUNTRY
One part underdog sports drama and one part political thriller, the international co-production THE FENCER is inspired by the true-life story of celebrated Estonian fencing champion Endel Nelis. Directed by acclaimed Finnish filmmaker Klaus Härö, it is a story about the universal need to overcome obstacles and hold on to freedom, just as a small country owes it to its people to rise to the challenge of a superior opponent on the global playing field.
Fleeing from the Russian secret police in the early 1950s because of his controversial past, young Estonian fencer Endel Nelis (Märt Avandi) is forced to return to his homeland, where he finds work as a teacher and starts a sports club for his students. Teaching them his great passion, fencing, Endel becomes a father figure and role model to his children, many of whom have been orphaned as a result of the Russian occupation, which ultimately brings him into conflict with the school’s principal. When the children want to participate in a national fencing tournament in Leningrad, Endel must make a choice: risk everything to take the children to Leningrad or put his safety first and disappoint them.
The winner of the Jussi Award (Finland’s Oscar) for Best Film and Best Cinematography, a Best Foreign Language Film nominee for the 2016 Golden Globes and Finland’s official selection for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film for 2016, THE FENCER will be released on VOD (iTunes, Amazon Instant, Google Play, YouTube, Vudu) and DVD for the first time on March 27, 2018. The DVD, which includes an interview with director Klaus Härö and select scene director’s video commentaries as bonus features, carries the suggested retail price of $29.95.
