Chicago, IL (February 6, 2013) – From renowned filmmaker Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man, Cave of Forgotten Dreams) comes another journey to the far ends of the world, a place where a remote culture thrives in some of the harshest conditions on Earth. Welcome to the tiny village of Bakhta in Siberia, one of the most beautiful yet severe places on the planet, where the culture of some 300 indigenous inhabitants is virtually untouched by modernity and the people live according to their own values and traditions. These are the rugged but proud lives that filmmakers Werner Herzog and Dmitry Vasyukov meditate upon in the remarkable documentary HAPPY PEOPLE: A YEAR IN THE TAIGA.

Bakhta lies at the heart of the Siberian Taiga on the banks of the Yenisei River, one of the three great Siberian rivers that flows into the Arctic Ocean. There is no telephone, running water or medical aid in Bakhta, which is so far away from civilization that it can only be reached by helicopter or boat. Here, the local population of hunters, fishermen and trappers embark on daily routines using tools, materials and methods that have barely changed over the past centuries. HAPPY PEOPLE: A YEAR IN THE TAIGA follows the lives of these Siberian peoples through all four seasons of the year—from the winter, when the river freezes over and snows cover the sub-zero land, through the eventual thaw and flourishing of flora and fauna in the spring and summer, up to the approaching chill of autumn and the beginning of the cycle anew.

Music Box Films Home Entertainment will release HAPPY PEOPLE: A YEAR IN THE TAIGA on DVD, VOD, and Digital Download for the first time on April 23. 2013 (pre-book March 19, 2013) following its acclaimed screenings at a host of international films festivals and a theatrical rollout to theaters in the U.S.’s top 40 markets. The HAPPY PEOPLE: A YEAR IN THE TAIGADVD disc will include a host of bonus features and carry the suggested retail price of $29.95.

The origins of HAPPY PEOPLE: A YEAR IN THE TAIGA are nearly as fascinating as the Russian and Ket people of the Russian North that the film celebrates. In Los Angeles, a friend of Herzog’s had obtained a four hour documentary by director Dmitry Vasyukov about hunters in the Siberian Taiga that had originally aired on Russian television. He screened them for Herzog, who was immediately intrigued by the material. Herzog soon contacted Vasyukov (initially via Skype) and proposed that they collaborate on adapting the film for Western audiences. The result is HAPPY PEOPLE: A YEAR IN THE TAIGA, an epic journey into the heart of the Siberian wilderness.

HAPPY PEOPLE: A YEAR IN THE TAIGA has been declared “an extraordinary work” by Adam Sternber of SCREENPICKS, “remarkable” by Alan Scherstuhl of THE VILLAGE VOICE and as “a  “mesmerizing Walden-like ode” by VARIETY. In the tradition of such revered Werner Herzog documentaries as Grizzly Man and Encounters at the End of the Word, Vasyukov and Herzog’s HAPPY PEOPLE: A YEAR IN THE TAIGA is an inspired and wholly engaging chronicle of a unique culture where Mother Nature dictates the terms and always has the final word.

HAPPY PEOPLE: A YEAR IN THE TAIGA — Synopsis:

Deep in the wilderness and far away from civilization, 300 people inhabit the small village of Bakhta at the Yenisei River, a zoogeographical border between Eastern and Western Siberia and one of the three great Siberian rivers that flow into the Arctic Ocean. There are only two ways to reach this outpost at the heart of the Siberian Taiga, one of the most beautiful yet severe places across the region: by helicopter or boat.  There’s no telephone, running water or medical aid. The indigenous local inhabitants–hunters, fishermen and trappers whose daily routines have barely changed over the last centuries—live according to their own values and cultural traditions.

With insightful commentary written and narrated by co-director Werner Herzog, Happy People follows the story of these Siberian peoples through all four seasons of the year to tell the story of a culture virtually untouched by modernity.

ELECTRIFYING NEWCOMER DREE HEMINGWAY DAZZLES AS AN ASPRIRING ACTRESS LIVING IN CALIFORNIA’S SAN FERNANDO VALLEY IN THIS ACCLAIMED NEW DRAMA

Available on DVD and VOD Beginning May 7, 2013

CRITICS' PICK:  “A thrillingly, unexpectedly good American movie.”
– Manohla Dargis, THE NEW YORK TIMES

“This is confident, engrossing storytelling, and the actors are terrific.”
 –Ben Sachs, CHICAGO READER

“One of the year's most arresting, heartfelt indies.”
– Robert Abele, LOS ANGELES TIMES

Chicago, IL (January 09, 2013) – An unlikely cross-generational friendship develops between a young aspiring actress and an elderly woman when their two worlds collide in California's San Fernando Valley in STARLET, the astute and emotional drama directed and co-written by Sean Baker and starring Dree Hemingway, one of the screen’s most exciting new talents in her breakthrough performance.

Ms. Hemingway (great granddaughter of Ernest and daughter of Mariel) stars as Jane, a sweet-smiling, blond-tressed 21-year-old looking to become an actress, who generally spends most of her time hanging around, getting high with her dysfunctional roommates, and taking care of her Chihuahua, Starlet. Drifting and driving contentedly around the sun-dappled San Fernando Valley, Jane one day finds a pile of cash stashed inside an old thermos she’s purchased at a yard sale held by the elderly Sadie (Besedka Johnson). After treating herself to a manicure and Starlet to a sparkly new halter, Jane returns to the house where she bought the thermos and, prompted by a growing sense of morality and guilt, begins a tentative friendship with Sadie, a sad woman who seems to be as isolated as Jane. Secrets emerge as Jane and Sadie’s relationship grows, revealing that nothing is ever as it seems.

Music Box Films Home Entertainment will release STARLET on DVD and VOD for the first time on May 7, 2013  following its theatrical rollout to theaters in the U.S.’s top 25 markets in 2012 and 2013. The STARLET DVD will include a host of bonus features and carry the suggested retail price of $29.95.

The winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 2011 SXSW Film Festival and the Fipresci Critics' Award at the 2011 Reykjavik International Film Festival, STARLET recently garnered a nomination for the John Cassavetes Award at the 2013 Independent Spirit Awards, and was selected to receive the Independent Spirit’s Robert Altman Award. For her starring role, Dree Hemingway picked up the Breakthrough Performer prize at the 2011 Hamptons International Film Festival, while Variety Magazine named her an “Actor To Watch” in 2012. Additionally, director/co-scripter Sean Baker was nominated for a Golden Leopard Award at the 2012 Locarno International Film Festival.

At Rotten Tomatoes, STARLET holds an outstanding rating of 92%, based on 38 published reviews, with Sean Baker receiving much praise for continuing the naturalistic directing style that he was touted for in his earlier films, the Independent Spirit Award-nominated Prince of Broadway and Take Out. Dree Hemingway, in particular, is being universally lauded for her star-making turn in STARLET as the beautiful young wannabe actress whose fateful encounter with a saddened, elderly woman sparks a moral awakening and her first tenuous step

s into true adulthood.

“Ms. Hemingway gives Jane an offbeat charm that steers STARLET away from sentimentality, and a generosity that is of a piece with its gentle humanist vision” said Dennis Lim of THE NEW YORK TIMES, while the LOS ANGELES TIMES’ Mark Olsen declares that “Dree Hemingway gives a performance of flaky charm, and tender sensitivity.”

STARLET is at once provocative, haunting, unpredictable, and surprisingly sweet…and it demands to be seen! More information on STARLET can be found on the MUSIC BOX FILMS website at http://www.musicboxfilms.com/starlet-movies-44.php.

Her curiosity piqued, Jane tries to befriend the caustic older woman in an effort to solve her seeming dilemma. Secrets emerge as Jane and Sadie’s relationship grows, revealing that nothing is ever as it seems.

You Can Only Run For So Long

HUGO WEAVING OF THE MATRIX & THE LORD OF THE RINGS STARS IN THIS STIRRING ROAD MOVIE THAT FINDS A DESPERATE FATHER AND HIS

YOUNG SON TAKING ON THE RUGGED AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK

Available on DVD, VOD, and Digital Download
October 16, 2012

“****. A great film.” –Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
…Achieves a state of vertiginous grace which stays with the viewer long after the end credits.” -INFILM.COM
A gorgeously realized road movie…a rhythmic, engrossing and deeply affecting film.
–Todd Brown, TWITCHFILM.COM

An Aussie variation on Badlands teeming with desolation, beauty and fear.
-Nick Shager, THE VILLAGE VOICE

Chicago, IL (September 14, 2012) – Hugo Weaving (The Matrix, Lord of the Rings trilogy) stars in the riveting Australian road movie LAST RIDE, the acclaimed debut feature film by director Glendyn Ivin, winner of the Palme D’Or at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival for his short film Cracker Bag.

A deceptively complex and emotional crime drama adapted from Denise Young’s award-winning novel, The LAST RIDE is led by Weaving as the troubled father Kev, a fugitive from the law who one night snatches up his 10-year-old son Chook and drives off into the rugged Australian outback. On the run for committing a crime of violence, Kev and Chook spiral into an increasingly complex and moving relationship as they head deeper and deeper into an unknown future where the only guarantee is danger. Loyalty, love and betrayal all rear their heads as the father and son’s journey finds the two battling the elements, desolation, fear, and each other.

Music Box Films Home Entertainment will release LAST RIDE on DVD, VOD, and Digital Platforms for the first time on October 16 (prebook September 11). Released theatrically this year in New York City and Chicago, the LAST RIDE DVD will carry the suggested retail price of $29.95.

Featuring a career-defining performance by Hugo Weaving, a remarkable feature film debut by young Tom Russell, and a 95% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ TomatoMeter,” LAST RIDE follows a journey that is both beautiful and foreboding, hopeful and heartbreaking. In LAST RIDE, The truest feelings of a father and son are revealed as Kev and Chook stay one step ahead of the law and move ever closer to their destinies on the harsh and relentless landscape of the Australian outback.

Recognized around the world for his roles as Elrond in the three Lord of the Rings blockbusters and Mr. Smith in The Matrix trilogy, not to mention the Red Skull in the recent smash Captain America: The First Avenger, Hugo Weaving’s alternately brutal and tender turn in LAST RIDE that hearkens back to his early breakout performances in such Aussie productions as 1994’s Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and 1991’s Proof, for which he won the Australian Film Institute award for Best Actor.

The critics agree, with, Roger Ebert of CHICAGO SUN-TIMES describing Weaver’s portrayal in LAST RIDE as “the performance of a lifetime” and Stanley Kauffman of THE NEW REPUBLIC lauding him as “exceptionally sound along every shade of his register.”

Most notably, Manohla Dargis of THE NEW YORK TIMES declared that “the Australian actor Hugo Weaving has the kind of blockbuster credits and genre fame that can overshadow a performer’s range…There’s more to Mr. Weaving than a spooky voice, though, but you need to look into the quieter corners of the movie world for the fuller picture.”

LAST RIDE is that fuller picture-and it arrives on DVD on October 16, 2012.

More information on LAST RIDE can be found on the MUSIC BOX FILMS website at http://www.musicboxfilms.com/last-ride-movies-7.php

and the film’s website at http://lastridemovie.com/.

LAST RIDE — Synopsis:

When his father bundles him into the car in the middle of the night, 10-year-old Chook (Tom Russell) knows something is wrong. Only after they have driven off into the remote and rugged Australian outback is it revealed that Chook’s father Kev (Hugo Weaving) is wanted by the law after committing a violent crime. As the increasingly desperate father and son journey deeper into the desert and an unknown future, their troubled relationship and the need to survive finds them battling the elements and each other. Forced to make a choice between what is right and the love of his father, Chook eventually comes to a decision that has devastating effect on both their lives.
