A SWEEPING, SUMPTUOUS EPIC STORY OF THE UNCONVENTIONAL ROMANCE BETWEEN TWO ARISTOCRATIC SISTERS AND AN ACCLAIMED POET IN 18TH CENTURY EUROPE
GERMANY’S OFFICIAL SUBMISSION TO THE ACADEMY AWARDS
From the acclaimed director Dominik Graf comes BELOVED SISTERS, an epic yet intimate romantic drama that illuminates the storied lives of two bold young women, Weimar-era sisters Caroline and Charlotte von Lengefeld, and the celebrated German poet Friedrich Schiller.
Germany’s official submission to the 2015 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, BELOVED SISTERS is set in Europe in the late 1700s but offers a surprisingly contemporary story of women who dared to flaunt convention as they approached love, marriage, sexuality and society on their own terms.

New York City (August 07, 2012) – Written and directed by Tomasz Thomson (Silent Storm) comes a German festival favorite being revered as “A Teutonic mix of Tarantino and Jarmusch” (Variety). SNOWMAN’S LAND stars Jürgen Rißmann (Totort and Henker & Richter), one of Germany’s most beloved television actors, as a professional hitman who has, quite literally, after murdering the wrong person, hit his last note. Forced to flee into the cold, presumably abandoned Carpathian Mountains, this dark comedy thriller presents a new situation for the man in hiding: kill or be killed. SNOWMAN’S LAND will have its American premiere in conjunction with a limited theatrical release on DVD beginning September 25, 2012 from Music Box Films Home Entertainment.
The Bonjour Tristesse, dedicated to highlighting independent cinema, claims SNOWMAN’S LAND “fits squarely in the mold of a quirky indie comedy. All the elements are there for this to be a cult classic.” SNOWMAN’S LAND opened at the 16th Annual Athens International Film Festival, the Zurich Film Festival, the Montreal World Film Festival, the Arizona Underground Festival, and the 2010 Edinburgh International Festival.
Filmed on location in Germany, SNOWMAN’SLAND follows Walter (Jürgen Rißmann), a professional hitman who completely botches his latest assignment by accidentally killing the wrong person. Worried, he seeks direction under a different crime boss and is forced to take part in a new operation, now located in the desolate Carpathian Mountains. As Walter flees to the secluded mountaintops, he is reunited with an old, carefree friend, Mickey (Thomas Wodianka). The two are ultimately caught in yet another incident. This time, however, there is nowhere to hide, and everyone must kill to survive.
Music Box Films Home Entertainment will release SNOWMAN’S LAND on DVD, VOD, and Digital Download on September 25, 2012 (with a pre-book date of August 21, 2012). The film will have a limited theatrical release in both Chicago and New York on the same day of its DVD release, which will carry the suggested retail price of $24.95.
On multiple platforms, SNOWMAN’S LAND can be artfully associated with the Coen brothers’ Fargo. Both are visually striking films – taking place in snowy, nearly abandoned places – which showcase unsatisfied main characters who, after horrible attempts at murder and/or kidnapping go awry, are willing to do anything to escape their troubles. Similarly, Thomson’s picture also has a Tarantino-esque feel, most represented in each of the films’ scores; a combination of opera and 80’s pop music masterfully links the characters with their violently twisting plots.
Snowman’s Land – Synopsis:
Walter is a professional killer and has bungled a job. Now he has to leave the city and takes up an offer from crime boss Berger to protect his house in a remote region of the Carpathian Mountains. At his side is his old friend Mickey. By accident Berger’s young and pretty wife, Sybille, is killed and, fearing Berger’s vengeance, Walter and Mickey decide to hide her body. What at first seemed to be a nice holiday trip for Walter and Mickey soon becomes a fight for survival for all parties involved.
About Music Box Films:

Music Box’s release of Guillaume Canet’s Tell No One was the most popular foreign-language film of 2008. In 2010, the film adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s trilogy of international mega-sellers dominated the foreign-language film market: the first in the series, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, was one of the most popular international releases of the decade with over $10 million in US box office. Music Box Films is independently owned and operated by the Southport Music Box Corporation which also owns and operates The Music Box Theatre, Chicago’s premiere venue for independent and foreign films.
