ELZA makes its U.S. theatrical premiere on Friday, November 30th at New York City’s new MIST Harlem Cinemas
“…beautiful, affecting performances, especially by the arresting [Stana] Roumillac as Elza and [Vincent Byrd] Le Sage as her father.”
–Vanessa Martinez, Indiewire.com
New York, NY (September 10, 2012) — Based on the real-life experiences of the filmmaker and the growing issue of African American and Caribbean children who are estranged from their fathers, writer/director Mariette Monpierre’s feature film debut ELZA is a tale of hope, family and acceptance. A new film from the Caribbean, ELZA presents a touching story about a young college graduate who returns to her hometown in Guadeloupe in search of a fleeting childhood memory and a father she barely remembers. Presented by Autonomous Entertainment, the film will make its U.S. theatrical premiere at New York’s new MIST Harlem Cinemas on Friday, November 30th and will run for at two weeks.
ELZA makes its U.S. premiere following acclaimed screenings at film festivals around the world, including the Pan African Film & Arts Festival, where it received Special Jury Recognition for Best First Feature, British Academy of Film & Television Arts/LA Festival Choice Award and the Programmer’s Award for Narrative Feature. ELZA also was nominated for Best Picture of the Diaspora at the African Movie Academy Awards in Lagos, and won Best Narrative Feature at the Roxbury International Film Festival.
Elza (Stana Roumillac), a beautiful young woman who lives in Paris with her mother (Mariette Monpierre), has reason to celebrate, as she’s just become the first in the family to earn a college degree. But on the eve of her great achievement, Elza realizes that she has never come to terms with her sense of identity, prompting her to return to her hometown in Guadeloupe to make contact with her long-lost father (Vincent Byrd Le Sage). Bringing passion and perseverance to her shocking discoveries on the sun-kissed Caribbean island, Elza discovers hard truths beneath the beauty and lushness of Guadeloupe’s gorgeous landscapes.
ELZA is inspired by director Mariette Monpierre’s personal story of searching for her biological father in her native Guadeloupe. With a reported 50% of African American and Caribbean children estranged from their fathers, the issue that Monpierre addresses is a real one. In many cases, these communities have a history of slavery, while in others the father simply neglects his responsibilities. As the story unfolds, the deep-rooted ELZA presents a breathtaking look at the troubling hardships that lay beneath the sun-kissed Caribbean island.
A wonderful and altogether fresh combination of coming-of-age family drama, and search for sense of self, ELZA is set to a soundtrack of sensual ballads and vibrant beats by such entrancing Caribbean artists as Victor O, Soft and neo-folk-soul performer Stévy Mahy.
Born in Guadeloupe and raised in Paris, Monpierre earned her Master’s degree in Media and Languages at the Sorbonne University and Smith College before taking up residence in New York City. After sharpening her skills as a producer at BBDO in New York where she produced commercials for Pepsi Cola, Visa, Pizza Hut, Gillette and FedEx, Monpierre won acclaim with her short film Rendez-vous at the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes, which then went on to festival screenings around the world. ELZAis Monpierre’s first feature film.

In the Era of Rising Heart Disease, Obesity, Diabetes, and Cancer Comes a Message of Hope with Proven Research To Save the Lives of Millions
FORKS OVER KNIVES
Featuring Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn

“A film that can save your life” – Roger Ebert
“Convincing, Radical and Politically Volatile” – Variety
America is saturated with fast-food chains, greasy fried-food trucks, and hot-dog eating competitions, so it should come to no surprise when someone you know is diagnosed with one of our country’s leading diseases. The alarming fact is that the medicine prescribed to remedy cancer, diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol, and high-blood pressure costs this country over 120 billion dollars each year. Even more shocking is that research proves how these deadly diseases can be turned on and off by simply adjusting the level of our animal-based protein intake. The same research found by two leading medical experts, biochemist and co-author of The China Study, Dr. T Colin CampbellPh.D., and internationally acclaimed physician and author of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., M.D., has led to the documentary that can very well save your life, Forks Over Knives.
Urging Americans to put down those knives and eat your vegetables, Director Lee Fulkerson takes viewers on an in-depth study of how eliminating, or greatly reducing, the amount of animal-based protein, dairy products, and finely processed foods in our diets can prevent, reduce, and in some cases reverse these deadly diseases. Beginning August 30th, Forks Over Knives, the film revered by The New York Times as a “great movie”, will be available nationwide on DVD, Blu-Ray, and VOD by Virgil Films & Entertainment.
In addition to the astounding evaluations uncovered, the film also follows the journey of real patients who are diagnosed with chronic conditions from heart disease to diabetes. The audience is given a first-hand look at their shocking physical and medical transformations after each patient gradually adopts a whole foods plant-based diet.
“…for this plant-based diet to take hold,” explains T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D. and Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., M.D., “the public must be endowed with nutritional literacy, the kind of knowledge that is portrayed in the new documentary, ‘Forks Over Knives.’ “
To further support this research, the film also provides conversations with: Neal Barnard, M.D.; Junshi Chen, Ph.D.; Connie B. Diekman, Med, RD, FADA; David Klurfeld, Ph.D; Matthew Lederman, M.D.; Alona Pulde, M.D.; Doug Lisle, Ph.D.; Terry Mason, M.D.; John McDougall, M.D.; Pam Popper, N.D; Gene Baur; Mac Danzig; Rip Esselstyn; and Ruth Heidrich, just to name a few.
Forks Over Knives received special attention on the Dr. Oz Show earlier this year with guests who appeared in the documentary including: T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., Caldwell Esselstyn, M.D., Neal Barnard, M.D., Rip Esselstyn, and Lee Fulkerson. The film also partnered with Whole Foods Market and The Engine 2 Diet for the NYC premiere, which also included a special screening and panel discussion. The film is currently playing in theaters nationwide.
Bonus features on the DVD and Blu-ray disc includes a featurette, deleted scenes, discussions, and more.
FORKS OVER KNIVES – SYNOPSIS
Forks Over Knives examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods. The major storyline traces the personal journeys of Dr. T. Colin Campbell, a nutritional scientist from Cornell University, and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., a former top surgeon at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic. Inspired by remarkable discoveries in their young careers, these men conducted several groundbreaking studies. Their separate research led them to the same startling conclusion; degenerative diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even several forms of cancer, could almost always be prevented – and in many cases reversed – by adopting a whole foods, plant-based diet. In addition, cameras follow “reality patients” who have chronic conditions from heart disease to diabetes, and are taught by their doctors to adopt a whole foods plant-based diet as the primary approach to treat their ailments.

MORGAN SPURLOCK PARTNERS WITH VIRGIL FILMS TO PRESENT
“HOW TO FOLD A FLAG”
A FILM BY MICHAEL TUCKER AND PETRA EPPERLEIN
WITH A FIRST TIME EVER ALL DIGITAL PREMIERE ON MAY 23
IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN VETERANS OF AMERICA (IAVA) WILL PARTNER IN RELEASE EFFORTS OF THE FILM ON ALL DIGITAL PLATFORMS UNDER THE “MORGAN SPURLOCK PRESENTS” LABEL IN CONJUNCTION WITH MEMORIAL DAY
NEW YORK CITY (MAY 6, 2011) – Academy Award® nominated filmmaker Morgan Spurlock once again partners with Virgil Films to release the feature documentary “HOW TO FOLD A FLAG – A film by Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker” under the “Morgan Spurlock Presents” brand label. The film, which chronicles the disparate homecomings of four Iraq war veterans, will be distributed on digital platforms simultaneously beginning May 23, just in time for Memorial Day Weekend.
HOW TO FOLD A FLAG will benefit from a first time ever all digital premiere and will be available to watch instantly streaming from Netflix and via Video on Demand (VOD) via iTunes, Hulu.com and the Hulu Plus subscription service, VUDU, CinemaNow, and Amazon Instant Video along with cable VOD providers iNDemand and TVN. In addition, a DVD release is scheduled for June 14, 2011.
Five years after filming the now classic Iraq War film GUNNER PALACE, directors Michael Tucker and Petra Epperlein turn their focus on America in HOW TO FOLD A FLAG. They follow the same soldiers home to America, as each struggles to define their wartime experience in a country largely indifferent to their service.
In North Carolina, Javorn Drummond works at a hog processing plant at night while he finishes his college degree on a dwindling GI Bill. In New York state, Jon Powers returns to his rustbelt hometown and decides to make a run for Congress. Out in Colorado, Stuart Wilf, the unit’s class clown, tries to resume the life he had before the war, while moving between low-wage jobs and comforting his mother who is preparing to send another son to war. Down in Texas, Michael Goss, a career soldier who was unjustly discharged from the Army after two tours in Iraq due to PTSD, seeks redemption in the arena as a cage fighter. And In the Pacific Northwest, the Colgan family, whose son Ben was the first Gunner killed in Baghdad, quietly keep the memory of their son alive while the 2008 Presidential Election loudly unfurls. They went to war as a unit, but came home alone.
“HOW TO FOLD A FLAG is a film that resonated with me from the moment I first saw it,” says Morgan Spurlock. “For us to be able to release such an important and powerful movie with Virgil Films across all digital platforms is exactly what we’ve wanted to do with this label from the beginning. Distribution models for indie films and documentaries such as this one are continually changing. This film is incredibly timely, and our goal is to reach the widest audience possible with this structure. Partnering with the digital streaming output entities, the On Demand providers, the DVD retailers, and with IAVA to help with marketing will hopefully deliver this film directly to an audience that wouldn’t have seen it or otherwise been aware of it. Traditional theatrical releases don’t always work for every film, and we are using all avenues that are available to us to distribute this amazing documentary. No other films have taken this direct all digital release platform before.”
“HOW TO FOLD A FLAG not only pays tribute to our fighting soldiers, but it also is a plea for help to the very same people we pay tribute to,” says Joe Amodei, CEO and Founder of Virgil Films. “Following on the heels of our successful release of RESTREPO, we wanted to continue to bring to American audiences important stories about our soldiers that need to be told. We will forever be in their debt and HOW TO FOLD A FLAG is just one more way of paying tribute to them. When I saw this film at the premiere, I was so moved and had to be part of its release.”
Virgil Films is partnering directly with the war veterans organization Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) to help spread the word about the film and the problems our soldiers face when they get home.
“HOW TO FOLD A FLAG is the moving profile of a generation of veterans whose homecoming stories have yet to be told,” said Paul Rieckhoff, Founder and Executive Director of IAVA. “While Americans increasingly pay less attention to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Tucker and Epperlein remind us that these conflicts are far from over. Their story shows us that the challenges facing the 2.2 million men and women who have served since 9/11 will continue playing out on the home front for decades to come. IAVA is proud to participate in the film’s release.”
“Eight years after arriving in Baghdad to film GUNNER PALACE–a time when news from Iraq was daily news–the public’s awareness of the realities of combat and its aftermath are at an all-time low,” says Michael Tucker, co-director. “We are thrilled to be working with Virgil Films and Morgan Spurlock to help bring the experiences of our veterans back to the forefront of our national dialogue this Memorial Day. America has asked much of our military; all our veterans ask is that we listen.”
