A SWEEPING, SUMPTUOUS EPIC STORY OF THE UNCONVENTIONAL ROMANCE BETWEEN TWO ARISTOCRATIC SISTERS AND AN ACCLAIMED POET IN 18TH CENTURY EUROPE
GERMANY’S OFFICIAL SUBMISSION TO THE ACADEMY AWARDS
From the acclaimed director Dominik Graf comes BELOVED SISTERS, an epic yet intimate romantic drama that illuminates the storied lives of two bold young women, Weimar-era sisters Caroline and Charlotte von Lengefeld, and the celebrated German poet Friedrich Schiller.
Germany’s official submission to the 2015 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, BELOVED SISTERS is set in Europe in the late 1700s but offers a surprisingly contemporary story of women who dared to flaunt convention as they approached love, marriage, sexuality and society on their own terms.
As the German Enlightenment flourishes in Weimar in the late 18th Century, vibrant Caroline von Beulwitz (Hannah Herszsprung) finds herself in an unhappy marriage to preserve their family’s financial standings, while younger sister, Charlotte von Lengefeld (Henriette Confurius), is next in line with the same fate. But when both sisters fall for the impoverished, hot-headed poet Friedrich Schiller (Florian Stetter), their growing desire ignites their own feelings of passion and creativity.
Defying the mores of their time, the sisters decide to share their love for Schiller, with Charlotte and Schiller marrying so that the three lovers may pursue their ménage à trois under the guise of convention. But as Caroline reveals herself to be a talented author in her own right, the trio’s fragile balance is threatened and the sisters’ once unbreakable connection is irrevocably changed.
Following its acclaimed release to the U.S.’s top theatrical markets this winter, Music Box Films Home Entertainment will release BELOVED SISTERS on VOD (Amazon Instant Video, Google Play, iTunes), Blu-ray and DVD for the first time on May 12, 2015. The Blu-ray and DVD disc will carry a special featurette: the Making of Beloved Sisters with suggested retail prices of $34.95 and $29.95, respectively.
“Historical characters always seem more interesting to me today–their world is far away, a mystery, following other laws and maxims,” says veteran filmmaker Dominik Graf of BELOVED SISTERS . “They’re not as close-minded as we are – no matter what kind of obstacles they had to overcome – they live with other extreme experiences, they know things we don’t. This makes historical characters in film seem very beautiful to me.”
BELOVED SISTERS won the award for Best Cinematography at the 2014 Bavarian Film Awards. It was also an Official Selection at the 2014 New York Film Festival, while director Dominik Graf was a Golden Berlin Bear Nominee at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival. On the festival circuit, BELOVED SISTERS garnered other notable nominations at the Chicago International Film Festival and the Hawaii International Film Festival.
