Retirement? Not really. Slowing down? Not possible. Old age? Speak for yourself! An earnest and endearing comedy about three elderly men in Seattle coming to terms with their sunset years, OLD GOATS, the debut feature by writer/director Taylor Guterson, offers a refreshing and energizing perspective on life’s final chapters as seen through the eyes of three men who don’t feel—or act—anywhere close to their ages.
OLD GOATS will have a limited theatrical engagement, presented by Music Box Films, and opens in New York City on January 24, 2014.
Shot in and around Seattle, OLD GOATS is a comedic blend of fiction and reality featuring three elderly men portraying themselves (within a fictional framework). There’s Britt, who lives alone on a boat and searches for excitement and romance in his life; Bob, who writes a book of memoirs about his life as a soldier, para-trooper, and bush pilot, but is uneasy about revealing his sins as a younger man; and David, who struggles to adapt into retired life while living with his bossy wife.
Cantankerous and set in their ways, each man must come to terms with the sunset years in his own unique fashion. Finding humor and heart in the everyday foibles of retirement-age life—whether it’s dining at the Men’s Oatmeal Club or seeking romance through the online dating site, SeniorConnections.com—OLD GOATS provides a wholly engaging and invigorating look at the golden years, as seen through the eyes of three men, whose guts and gusto re-affirm that they still clutch the gold in the palms of their hands.
OLD GOATS has enjoyed sold out screenings, enthusiastic audience response and critical acclaim at film festivals nationwide. In addition to winning the Special Jury Prize for Narrative Features at the 2012 Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, OLD GOATS was named an official “Best of the Fest” selection at the Seattle International Film Festival, the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and the Sun Valley Film Festival. Acknowledging the arrival of a major new filmmaker, Eric Kohn of Indiewire declared OLD GOATS to be “an entirely solid, witty and poignant look at the impact of the aging process…. Director Taylor Guterson announces himself as a talent to watch.”
Music Box Films Home Entertainment will issue OLD GOATS on home entertainment platforms on January 21, 2014.
OLD GOATS — Synopsis:
Old Goats is the hilarious and heartfelt story of a trio of spirited senior citizens on a quest to make the most of their sunset years. Friends Bob, Britt, and Dave are each confronting aging in his own unique fashion: straight-laced Dave rebels against his wife’s plans for their new retirement, hoarder Britt struggles with online dating after decades alone on his houseboat, and lively ladies man Bob juggles a hyperactive social schedule and a fanciful memoir about his adventurous past. Rife with equal doses of attitude and charm, this slice-of-life comedy finds offbeat humor in the everyday foibles of life and love after retirement, and provides a refreshing perspective on “the golden years,” proving it’s never too late to chase your dreams.
